FAT Volumes

Does Dell ship any desktop or laptop with Fat Volumes currently?

I am sure that all the Windows XP systems from Dell are NTFS. You could reinstall and set it to FAT. When I installed mine, I set it FAT32.

Why did you switch---What advantage do you see for doing that---And is that something many people are doing all the time?

There is no advantage to formatting the HD in FAT32.

NTFS is far superior in every way to fat32, it is always best and recommended to leave it NTFS.

I use FAT because I have a 3 spindle computer and use a floppy. I am probably in the minority using FAT32, but that is my choice. Here is an article about both file systems.

Fat32 may be slightly faster is also a bit more compatible ...  that said, NTFS is more less likely to die on you and is more secure, and is more efficient -- i'd pick it hands down unless i had a very pressing and specific reason not to

I read the Article before.

Unless you NEED dos for some reason there isn't really any advantage of using Fat 32.

As an added note you can still boot the system with a dos floppy if you need to use The HD utilites etc. All of the HD manufactors supply downloadable floppy disk images to boot the machines.
