System Restore will not restore non-system files.

If you've used the Explorer Search and haven't found them, look in the recycle bin. You might also check to make sure your system is up to date on security patches, with current, real-time antivirus and firewall protection.

A corrupted profile can also lead to file loss from the desktop.

If you are running Windows XP, have you checked to see whether there is a folder on your desktop called "Unused Desktop Shortcuts". If there is, you may find the missing items in there - XP does an automatic cleanup of icons which haven't been used for 60 days unless you tell it otherwise. For more information, search Help & Support for "desktop cleanup".

If you reinstalled Windows, that's what happened to your files - the profile was blown away.

Even a professional data recovery outfit would have trouble restoring these files. They're gone.

You might want to think about checking your hard drive. Reboot your computer. At the Dell blue logo screen, press the Ctrl + Alt + D keys at the same time. The computer beeps once to acknowledge that the hard drive diagnostics have been initiated and the following message appears:

IDE Diagnostics running, please wait
Primary
Drive 0: (Drive Model) -

The test may take up to three minutes to run the diagnostics (the time is dependent upon size and speed of drive). When the diagnostics are complete, one of the following messages appears:

IDE Diagnostics running, please wait
Primary
Drive 0: (Drive Model) - Pass
Drive 1: No IDE Device
-OR-
Secondary
Drive 0: (CD-ROM Model) - Diagnostics not supported
Drive 1: No IDE Device
Test complete, Press to reboot

Press the key and restart the computer.
