Firmware Update For TOSHIBA DVD-ROM SD-C2612 is Needed

I have a 5150, 512MB, 64MB ATI 9000

My Toshiba DVD-ROM will not read some types of CDRs.

One type for sure is Memorex CDRs. I have an external burner which reads these cd's but bthat doesn't help when I travel.

Does anyone else have this problem?

I have the same problem. The drive fails to read almost all burnt CDs. Interestingly it will also read some burnt CDs only sometimes ... it's kinda capricious. This is extremely frustrating .

Searching around will reveal that there is a firmware update, but it appears to only be available for floppies (correct me if I'm wrong) and I'm also not sure if this resolves the issue.

These pages are only for advanced users. Bad flashing could destroy your drive definitively. Read carefully the installation notes of your firmware before you upgrade. The Firmware Page and the drive manufacturer can't be responsable on REMEMBER: This is at your own risk!!!!

Any chance of getting legitimate firmware upgrades that actually might be supported?

That update doesn't list the 5150 as a compatible model

You're missing the point.  These updates don't flash the NVRAM on your notebook, they are intended to flash the firmware of the drive itself.  AFAIK, Toshiba doesn't develop notebook specific firmware flashes.

Which brings us back to the problem of: these need floppy drives.
