HD reporting incorrect disk space

I am running Win98 on my new Dell Dimension 2400, and after two months of owning it and running it without a hitch, I've run into a fairly major problem, in that the computer is saying the hard disk is full, which it is not. All of a sudden without me installing any new software, data or anything, it says the disk is full. It's a 40gig drive, and I've heard of this happening before.

Any suggestions?

Thankyou, Peter Ellis.

Hi,

Empty the recycle bin,

Clear temporary internet files

Remove program(s) you don't use.

What have you been saving or downloading in the way of music & video files

In addition to Ceri's suggestions, just for kicks, go into My Computer and make sure you can see 40 GB. It may actually report a little less, but just make sure it's not 2 GB. If it is, you've forgotten to use the FAT32 file system to partition your drive.

Just out of curiousity, WIN98 on a 2400??  Why??  You can't get any drivers for it.

thanks guys for your replies, although it has not solved my problem. all the temporary internet files, etc. were already empty, and the only program i could delete that i wasn't using was outlook express 6. all the rest i have installed from scratch, all up i think i remember i used something like 3gig. this is why it has me confused.

i used win98 because i required autoexec.bat to run some events/ set variables up for me and didnt' bother learning how to do it with XP, although i tried.

please help me Dell gurus. my dimension is broken pretty much. i think i will have to log a support call with dell.

please if you have any further ideas, post.

thankyou, peter ellis.

What hard drive size is being reported in the BIOS? In Win 98? How much free space?

You could just go through folders one by one in Explorer and see how much room is being used by each.
