HDD not able to format - Get an error when trying to restore to factory setting

My windows 7 on my Dell Studio 1749 was loading slowly. So I decided to restore to the factory setting. When I try to restore to the factory setting I get an Error at the first step, which is formatting your harddrive and I have no other option but to exit this step.

I have restore to another day's image backup to make my laptop work.

Can some one help me to restore my laptop to the factory setting.

Please let me know if you need more details.

Note : the pc is working now but very slow.

Thanks

Santhosh.

Hi SanthoshGopalan,

Welcome to the Community.

I understand your concern and would help you out in resolving the issue.

Caution this utility formats the operating system hard drive partition prior to restoring the factory image. This means data on that partition is deleted and cannot be recovered.

Please follow the link below in Restoring Your Dell Computer to Original Factory Installation.

Please let us know if this helps.

Thanks & Regards,

Hi SantoshGopalan,

Check these steps if you wish to restore the system back to factory settings on Windows 7. This process will only work if the restore partition is available. This process will cause data loss hence back up your data/files before performing  these steps.

1) Shut down the computer

2) Turn on the computer, as soon as you see the Dell logo, tap the F8 key 3-5 times.

3) On the Windows Advanced Options screen highlight Repair Your Computer and press Enter

4) Click Next under System Recovery Options

5) Type in the Windows User name and Password and click OK(Leave the password field blank if no password)

6) Click on Dell Data Safe Restore and Emergency Backup

7) Choose Select other System Backup and more options and click Next

8) Choose Restore my Computer and click Next

9) Click Next under Restore my Computer

10) Highlight Factory Image date under Restore my Computer and click Next

11) Choose Restore without preserving new or changed files

12) Choose Yes and click Next

13) The computer would restore to the factory settings

14) Create User name and password

15) The computer would restart and boot to the desktop

If this does not help, we can re-install windows 7 using the disc. However kindly let me know if the system is slow when starting up or while using any application or programs. Also check if the system is slow only while using Internet. This will help us isolate the issue further and hope we can get this fixed without a restore or re-installation.

Kindly reply with the results.

Hi Satya / all,

I have tried that initially. sorry for not being clear enough.

When I try to restore to the Dell factory settings, the first step is 'Formatting the Partition' there is an error in this stage. The error code is that 0x400110020000100A and the format of the partition fails.

I want to restore to the factory settings but this error prevents me from doing it.

For now I had a backup of the system image and I have restored it using that.

I have not been given any CD with the Dell Studio 1749 laptop when I purchased it.

1. What should i do to get rid of the above error

2. Can i download the Windows 7 installation which was shipped / installed to my laptop at the time of the sale by Dell.

3. Can I get a CD of the operating system shipped to me ( are there any costs involved). I got this laptop in June 2010.

Thanks

Santhosh.

Hi SantoshGopalan,

Thank you for the reply.

I believe the restore partition is corrupt for which it is giving errors and restore to factory settings is not getting through. Dell and Microsoft has stopped shipping the Windows Installation discs because of a Media Reduction Initiative, however please click on User name and Add me as a friend and send a direct message with the service tag, contact name, and phone number so that I can call you back and get this taken care of. Please be assured this issue will be taken care of.

Awaiting your response.

Before you spend more time on this, run an extended hard drive diagnostic.  F12 at powerup.   It is very likely the cause of the slowdowns you experienced is a failing hard drive.
