Yeap, otherwise the firmware would be named differently, since many different laptop brands use that drive (e.g. if IBM uses the same drive in their laptops the firmware would be 0202). So to say it in other words, yes it is the original drive that came with the dell!
Is this drive supposed to be able to write to + or - DVD discs? I just started using my 1100 laptop DVD drive and it reads + and - R drives and burns -CD's. I have the same unit. It doesn't see DVD discs prior to attempts to burn to them.
No, it is not supposed to do that! I didn't try this, because I knew that this wouldn't work. All I am talking about is getting DVD-R or DVD-RW burned in some other writer to be able to read them in the drive mentioned above. The drives from Hitachi-LG Data Storage that can burn DVD's have a different name e.g. HL-DT-ST DVD+RW GSA-4040N. So if it saya GCC it will only be able to burn CD's. GSA or GWA can do both CD and DVD!
