If you are using a packet-writing program, such as Sonic DLA or Roxio Drag-to-disc, then you need to format the CD-RW. However, if you are using a regular burning program, such as Sonic RecordNow, or the XP burning wizard, you do not want to format the disc. Just erase it.
You'll find forum regulars do not recommend DLA or Drag-to-disc. The headaches far outweigh the convenience. Just use the XP burning wizard. You can add files one or a few at a time. If you are not familiar with the procedure, follow these instructions. Open Windows Explorer, select the file(s) you want to write to the disc, right click the selected files, hover over Send to, then select CD-RW (or DVD-RW) drive. Windows will copy the files to a temporary location and a little bubble will pop up telling you there are files waiting to be written to the CD. Click that and a box will pop up showing files on the disc and files waiting to be written to the disc. Click File, Write these files to CD.
I would rather use anything than these $%^&(()&*^%# cd writers but don't know anything about XP burning wizard. Doing the Send option brought up 5 different places but no CD drive. -Musicmatch Burner Plus was an option but I'm not doing any music. When I first got this PC (Dell9100) I did what you suggested and had all these files waiting to be written to disk but I had no idea how to get them written. Maybe my wizard is lost (same as me). What else do I need. Thanks
Getting closer. Have the Send To printed out and set up and everything is OK except what do I right click on to send CD-RW to the "Send To" folder and where do I find it. I have a CD mounted but when I do a "Send To" I get a "D:\ is not accessable. Incorrect Function. " message. Thanks
Just a note until John gets back with you, click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 100, article 40 for that last error message.
Best Regards

checked your area. Don't have Roxio loaded. Have Sonic that came with Dell 9100. From all the problems that are on the CD forum, they should come up a higher capacity floppy and get rid of CD's.
Your right except that they are a little expensive right now. But I still have a problem with the CD's. How can I drag & drop the CD-RW to the "Send To" folder. Thanks
Osprey.. After reading another forum thread where you recomended removing Sonic DLA, I removed it and also checked the "Allow writing to cd". Pure magic because the CD drive(D:)appears in the "send to" folder. I sent a folder to the D: and have the folder files ready to be written but there is no bubble popping up to click File. How can I find or make this bubble pop up. Thanks
Ok, good, making progress. Open My Computer, then open your CD-RW drive. It should display the list of files waiting to be written to disc. Click File, Write These Files to Disc.

Ok, no problem. Sometimes the Send-to option is not set up. Follow these instructions and you should be able to find it when you're done:

With Windows, there are always multiple ways to do everything. See this article for more ideas:
