Yikes.

What do I do after I purchase a new hard drive and replace the old one (i.e. How do I get the system and software on the drive)?

Is there any way to get some of the information off of the old drive?

Sorry, its a Dimension 9100 running Windows XP

Thanks,

Paul

Paul.

After you have installed the replacement SATA hard drive and reloaded XP, you could temporarily install the 'old' drive as a secondary and see if you can transfer the files to the new primary C:/ drive, you will need a SATA data cable.

The directions for replacing the hard drive are here

How to carry out a clean reinstall of XP.

First, disconnect all the peripherals from the system except the keyboard, mouse and monitor.

How to configure a Dell Dimension series system to boot to the CD or DVD drive.

This XP reinstallation guide is excellent, or you can use Dell's Restallation Guide here.

While installing, remember to delete all existing partitions when you are prompted, then recreate the partitions and format the hard drive, following by installing XP.

If you are not using RAID, enter the system setup, scroll down to drives, press Enter or + to expand the drive menu then down to "SATA Operation", press Enter.
Change the SATA operation mode to "RAID Auto/ATA" press ESC to save and exit the BIOS.

After installing XP, you need to install the drivers and applications in the following order,

Desktop System Software [if applicable]
Chipset
Video
Network Interface Card [NIC]
Audio
Modem
All other drivers.
Then, install the Anti Virus utility and update the definitions, followed by all the critical Microsoft updates.

Try to note the type of hardware devices you have. This can help you select and install the correct drivers and applications.

Bev,

Made some progress:

I installed the hard drive and XP.

Started installing the drivers and applications and have a few questions:

Desktop System Software [if applicable] - {Is this the Dell Dimension and XPS Resource CD?}

Chipset { I believe I download these off the internet, can I connect the ethernet cable and will it work?}
Video

Network Interface Card [NIC]
Audio
Modem

All other drivers.

Then, install the Anti Virus utility and update the definitions, followed by all the critical Microsoft updates.

{Other CD's I have:  Dell Tools SystemSoftware,Cyberlink PowerDVD,Sonic MyDVD and RecordNow, and Modem - Is this the correct order?}

{When do I re-install hardware (e.g. printer)?}

Thanks,

Paul

Paul.

Desktop System Software, should on a CD, or you can download it from here and burn it to a CD.

The Network Interface Card [NIC] driver needs to be installed, this is not the Chipset.

The Cyberlink PowerDVD, Sonic MyDVD and RecordNow, are the 'All Other Drivers'.

The printer is installed, after you have all the drivers, the AV utility and definitions updated and all the critical Microsoft updates are installed and the computer is running to your satisfaction.

The 9100 Dell download site is here

Bev,

I got the Desktop System Software and the Chipset downloaded.

Is the NIC the "V.9X (capable)/56K Data/Fax Modem Software" Disk?  I didn't see anything on the Dell Download  Site.

Thanks for all of your help.  It is truly appreciated.

No, that's the Modem.

NIC is listed under 'Network', on the download site.

NIC > Network Interface Card.

Okay, found it (sorry).

How do I find out which one to download?  There are two types: Dell wireless 1450 USB2.0 Adapter and (R) PRO VE Network Connection.  Also, there are two versions of each of the drivers.

I can't find any documentation with the computer that helps.

Thanks,

Paul

Paul.

Unless you have added a NIC card or have a USB wireless adaptor, then I would say, it's the 'Intel PRO/100 VE Network Connection' .

The 1mb download is the driver and should be installed. The 5mb is the NIC diagnostics and I would install this after the system has been fully loaded.

Bev,

Thanks, that was my thought also.  There are two files for the Intel PRO/100 VE Network Connection with the same date, but one is 5MB and the other 1MB. Do I load them both?

Bev,

Okay.  How do I load all the MicroSoft's critical updates and the AV latest definitions?

Paul.

I would load the router first, followed by the rest.

Remember to load all the MicroSoft's critical updates and the AV latest definitions.

Bev,

I have loaded all of the drivers and things seem to be working fine.  THANKS FOR ALL OF THE GREAT SUPPORT!!

I am going to start loading the software (Microsoft Office, printer, router, etc.). Should I be concerned about the order I install?  Also do I need to look for Windows or other types of on-line updates?

Thanks again,

Paul

Paul.

When you can go online, for Critical Updates, open 'Tools' in the Menu bar, then click 'Windows Update' and follow the prompts and you should see something like this.

Regards to the AV, after you have installed the AV software, there should an 'Update' prompt, or go to the publishers website and download them.

How did you update your AV before reloading windows?

Bev.
