The drive has developed bad sectors. It needs to be replaced as soon as possible.
I would not bother to reinstall XP at this point. Attach it to a desktop and copy what you can soon - the drive may not be useable much longer.

That's what I thought. Will go out and get an adapter to get all my data. Then contact Dell and get it replaced.
