Hard disks can fail in hours or last years, basic law of averages.
They will all fail eventually.
How long they last is little more than a lottery. When replacing a hard drive or buying a new one. Warranty length would be amongst the most important factors IMHO.
Personally my main backups are everythiing.in at least four different ways.to different media.
You don't need to backup programs you still have all the installation files or or original CD's for.
If in doubt back it up.
You do need to back up personal data, music, e-mail , pcitures etc.
Thanks for that but it shouldn't be past its sel date, I only got it in April 2005, if it is I shall kick up a fuss. Sorry but do I have to back up everything including programmes pre installed.
