Hard drive failed - reinstallation problems

Hello everybody,

I have a Dell Dimension 8400, with Window XP.
my Hard Disk has failed and a technician came with a new Hard Disk.
Unfortunately, I had to reinstall everything myself, and am meeting some problems.
I have searched through this forum, but could not find the solution.

- When I want to read my DVDs in CyberLink DVD programme, it starts only a few seconds and returns to the blue screen with only "OK" so I cannot see my DVD.
When I try with Windows Media Player, a message tells me that there is a Copyright problem.

Do you think that it could be because I missed something in the reinstallation ? (like, the Copyright information would have stayed in my old Hard Disk, and the DVD will never play on my new Hard Disk) It is very annoying not to be able to read DVD, it was working fine before the Hard Disk failure...
Has anybody encoutnered this problem before ?

- Before, when my Dell started, there was a blue bar with dell.com written.
It is thanks to that that I could run a diagnosis with Dell Support on the phone, and detect Hard Disk failure.
Now, when my Dell starts, I don't have this bluebar anymore, and it worries me.
What should I install tpo have it again ?

- I had received two CDs called "Dell Dimension EuroTools" (part 1 and 2) but I don't find how I should reinstall them on my computer (and what it is about...)

Finally, I have kept my failed Hard Disk (I need to ship it back to Dell next week), because on the phone the Dell Support person told me I should install it as a slave disk and I could get back my data.
I have never done that - but it seems there is a lot of information already in these forum. I have started to take notes and print some of the information found.
Just to make sure if you have any advice to give me before I open the computer to put the Hard Disk inside (I am very worried I have to do that for the first time).

Thank you very much for your attention and kind help.

junnja,

Thank you for visiting the Dell Community Forum.

Before you can play a DVD movie, you must install DVD Decoding software. I am not sure which is shipping in Europe, but most likely it is PowerDVD (if not you may have WinDVD). Make sure this software has been installed before you can play a DVD movie.

DELL-Stephen,

thank you for your answer.

I did re-install Power DVD (powered by Cyberlink). I get the start page, but when I click start the movie with my DVD, I can only see the first image during a few seconds, then it returns to a screen with only "OK" on there.

When I try with Window Media Player, the following message displays (freely translated from French):

"Windows Media Player cannot read the DVD because a problem occurred during the setup of copyright protection".

It seems that this is the "copyright protection" I woudl need to re-install correctly, but I have no clue how to do this (the DVD has been bought normally, and I can play it on my DVD player...

I can also play my music CDs so it only concerns the DVD.

I am still trying to figure out what it is :-/

Hi,

Un-install both the software from add/remove programmes. Then download Media player 10 from this link :

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/mp10/default.aspx

Else you can try this free decoder as well :

http://www.cliprex.com/

Try one software at a time and check. Also check if this issue is specific to all the DVD's or only this one ?
