No size limit as far as I know.

Given the vintage of the machine, the BIOS will likely have a limit of 137 GB.  You can still use larger drives, however, provided the CD you use to install the operating system will support 48 bit LBA.  This includes Windows 2K with Service Pack 4, Windows XP with Service Pack 1 or later, and Windows Vista.  Some folks have never had trouble using drives larger than the BIOS will support, but for reasons unknown, others will occasionally have a glitch that will corrupt the OS now and again.  If you would like to use a larger drive you might be well advised to make the boot partition smaller than 137 GB and set up a data partition in the area beyond the 137 GB threshold.  In this way you will preserve your data should the C drive require a new install of the OS.

I wonder if the latest bios A13 will cure that issue? Released in July 2005, could not find anything in the release notes.

Mombodog;

Dell and most other laptop vendors were kinda slow with introducing 48 bit LBA into laptop BIOS's that used the IDE interface.  My own 5160 has a BIOS dated March, 2005, but it still has the 28 bit LBA and the 137 GB limit.  Dell did make the change for select laptops, but these were generally recorded in the BIOS info files so you know which ones they are.  If the BIOS info file says nothing, yet you still have a BIOS dated late in 2005, there is still a possibility that it has the 48 bit LBA.  Since it isn't on the record, however, the only way you find out is to install it and look at the report in system setup.

As Speedstep indicates, however, it is still possible to use the large drives provided your OS installation disk supports 48 bit LBA.  Many people do just that and never have a problem.  The only thing they need to watch out for is disk utilities that use the BIOS routines to talk to the drive.
