Help with HDD setup (15K Fujitsu SCSI)
Hi everyone!
I am brand new to these forums as I just became a proud Dell owner (havnt even gotten my system yet). But I want to make sure I get all the wrinkles out before I try and set this rig up. As a result this is my first thread/post.
OK, so my problem/question is (thanks in advance to any help):
I just purchased a XPS 720 (red 1kW power supply) specs:
Intel QX6850
160 GB Seagame SATA HD
4x 1GB Kingston Hyper-X 1066mhz pc-8500 (upgraded via newegg)
Nvidia 8800 GTX 756MB
Vista Home Premiem
Nvidia nForce 680i BTX mobo
I dont think the rest of the specs are relavent (let me know if you need more specs)
Ok... So, I just bought 3 Fujitsu 36.7GB 15K RPM Fibre Channel 3.5'' Hard Drives to supplement my 160GB that comes with the system.
My question is, what is the best way to set these up?
Because these Fujitsu drives are SCSI, I need to buy a SCSI controler correct? So once I get that installed into one of the PCI-E slots and all the drives hooked up to it I want to set one of the Fujitsu drives set to boot. Can somone help with this? Is it as easy as intalling Vista to that drive? Also I obviously care about performance so I want to configure these drives to the fastest possible. What do I want? RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5? Can I set the (3) 15k drives to RAID 0 and the 160GB Seagate @ RAID 1 and have it set as an auto backup drive?
Please help, your sugestions are greatly appreciated.

I have not. I have not read anything about these in my previous searchs online. Why did I think I needed an SCSI controller? What are the differences?
Thanks!

You need a fiber channel controller - have you priced these? They start at about $1,000.

LOL thanks for the advice... Sounds like I might be better off going with a 10K WD raptor SATA drive instead?
Because these are cheaper and provide additional storage capabilities would it matter (performance wise) if i get 1 or 2 of these?
Should I just get rid of the 7200RPM drive if I go with 1 raptor drive? Should I use 1, 2 or 3 drives? and once again what is the best configuration?
Thanks again for all the advice.

Fiber channel is a form of SCSI controller/drive used in high-end server applications. You might want to also purchase a pair of earplugs - or make sure you can isolate the system somewhere. The screech of three, 15,000 rpm drives running all the time will drive you out of your mind if it's at your desk or elsewhere in your living space.

If you don't want a RAID array that would be the best option...
As for the 15K hard drives I think I'll give them a miss I find the 7200rpm HD's noisey at times...

I already bought the a 150gb wd raptor drive.
I think i decided im going to use the raptor as my master boot drive and use the seagate 7200rpm as a backup, no RAID config
let me know if you have a better sugestion
ps i have 3x 36.5GB fibre channel fujitsu 15k rpm drives at home if anyone is intrested

because the performance gains are so minimal and i dont want to spend the extra money at the moment to get another raptor drive this seems to be the best option.
THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP!!!
