Hi guys, I got an hdd error code 0146...What should I do (step by step)?

Hi guys, My studio 1558 is not working because I got an error code 0146...What should I do (step by step)? I need the data from that drive and the hdd is recognized by the dell bios. Please help me out on what to do step by step. I know i have to purchase a new internal hdd and order a usb hard disk drive enclosure, but what should I do about transfering the data from the failed hdd to the new hdd that I will order? And will I need to order a new dell oem windows 7 home premium to install on the new hdd?

Thanks

Hi,

The 0146 error indicates a possible hard drive failure. To confirm if the hard drive has failed, run the Custom test via 32-Bit diagnostics:

  • Turn on (or restart) your computer.
  • When the Dell logo appears, press 2-3 times.
  • When the 'One Time Boot Menu' appears, highlight 'Boot to Utility Partition' and press .
  • When the Dell Diagnostics main menu appears, select the Custom Test
  • Check the box 'Quick Tests only. Click + symbol next to Hard Drive. Click 'Confidence Test' and click 'Run Tests'.Similarly, click 'Device Self Test' and click 'Run Tests'.
  • Please share the error code(s) if any.

Please try to access Safe Mode and perform a data backup. You can save this data to an external hard drive or a USB flash drive. To access Safe Mode, turn off the computer. Restart PC; as soon as the Dell logo appears, press F8 key. Press the down arrow key to highlight 'Safe Mode with Networking' and press Enter. If the safe mode is accessible, you will be able to save your data.

For the Windows 7 OS re-installation DVD, I have added you as a friend. Please accept my friend request by clicking on my name highlighted in blue and then click on 'Friends' tab at the top and then click on 'Request to Review' and finally click on 'Accept' button.
I am sending you a private message as well. Click on 'Inbox' to respond to the message and provide system’s Service Tag and contact details so I may access your system records and check for further course of action. You could also click on 'Start Conversation' to send a private message. Based on your region and warranty, I will suggest the possible course of action.

Hope this helps.
Do write back with the results.

Hi manpreet. I pressed f8 and tried running in safe mode with networking and the syatem froze. it said loading windows files and stopped showing any progress so I decided to hold the power on button to shut it down and restart again by pressing f12 and running the quick tests only from the dell diagnostics.

I couldn't access that so I inserted the dell cds and drivers resource cd and booted from that cd and accesed the test from there . Here are the results from running the quick test confidence test on my sata hdd:

**SATA DISK S/N= 5VJ4R[JU - Confidence Test **

Performing a read test at the beginning of the media

Performing a read test  at the end of the media

Peforming random seeks in the middle of media

No additional sense information

Test Results : Fail

Error Code 0F00:1344

Msg:  DISK - Block 136460925: Can't read, replace disk

Test progress:35%

Overall progress:35%

The given error code and message can be used by Techincal Support to help diagnose the problem. Do you want to continue testing?

I clicked yes to keep running and it then later said:

No additional sense information

Test Results : Fail

Error Code 0F00:1344

Msg: DISK - Block 136461724: Can't read, replace disk

Test progress:42%

Overall progress:42%

The drive failed to perform the confidence test properly. This may indicate that the drive needs to be replaced (if this is a removable media device, try different media).

I guess I need to replace the disk by purchasing a new studio 1558 hdd. So how can I transfer that old data from my dead hdd to the new one?

You are right, the hard drive has failed and should be replaced ASAP.

Regards to recovering the data, one of the easiest procedures for recovering the files and folders, is to remove the failed hard drive from the computer and use an USB 2.0 adaptor similar to THIS, then attach the hard drive to the USB port on the working computer and see if you transfer the files and folders to it.

Note: Only data files and folders can be transfered, any applications, utlities and programs, need to be reinstalled from their CD's, or downloaded from the publisher's website.

Sorry, but I do'nt think it will work, the EZ Upgrade Kit from Apricorn is for cloning an exsisting hard drive to a new hard drive, not for trying to recover the data files and folders.

For cloning you usually cannot use a failed hard drive as the source drive.

Oh ok well just in case I guess I will keep it then. I will purchase that sabrent usb adapter. I also received a 64 bit windows dell oem reinstallation cd and I ordered a new 320 dell 5400 rpm internal hdd. I do have a working saber laptop with 64 bit win 7 home premium with a 232 gb total capacity and I have about 85 gb remaining, and it's hdd rpm is 7200rpm. So here is what I plan to do I want to transfer the data from the dead hdd to my working sager and tranfer back to my studio 1558 wih the new hdd correct me if I'm wrong: 1. Remove dead hdd and install that into a external hdd enclosure( the one in the apricorn that I bought) 2. Install the new 320gb hdd in the studio 1558 3. Install/reinstall the operating system win 7 home premium on the studio 1558 4. Then attempt to use the sabrent USB adapter to transfer data from my dead hdd to my sager laptop. 5. Then finally transfer all that data from the sager to the studio 1558 wih the new hdd So do you think that all the data I want to transfer will fit into the 85 gb left on my sager laptop or should I purchase another external hdd for my sager for more space? Also do you think theres any sort of chance I could attempt to clone the dead hdd to the new hdd my studio 1558? Thanks as you can see I'm quite confused but I want to do this right

The procedures you propose in paragraphs 1 to 5 should work fine.

Regards to tour chances for trying to clone a failed hard drive, are nil.

I image/clone hard drives, to a create backup drive daily and have yet to clone a failed drive with mechanical issues.
