How confirm RAID 1 setup is really working?

I have RAID 1 configured with Intel Matrix Storage Manager on a new Dell Vostro 200. Everything seems to be working just fine. But I'm wondering whether, over time, I should have some way to confirm that the files I think are being duplicated to the 2nd drive are really there. I'm thinking analogously to making sure that the files written in a tape backup procedure are really recoverable. I don't want to do anything as drastic as cause a failure to see if the 2nd drive is there. Once the 2nd drive was put into the RAID setup it, of course, no longer shows as a device I can separately look at ... or at least I don't know how to. Is there a way for me to peek at the files on it? Does that makes sense? -- Jim

The Intel Matrix Storage Manager in Advance View will show both hard drives. But, if you want to see if both drives actually have the same data you can always "break" the RAID 1 array via rebooting, pressing CTRL-I to enter the Intel Matrix ROM BIOS and delete the RAID 1 array. You'll be warned that you'll lose data, but you will not lose any data. After deleting the RAID 1 array and rebooting, Windows will show you two identical drives with the same partition/folder/file structure. Then, when you are comfortable with what you see, you can launch the Intel Matrix Storage Manager and perform a RAID 1 migration by selecting "Create RAID Volume from Existing Hard Drive". This process will take ~1hr or more. After the process, you'll only see one drive in My Computer.

You can run a report from the Intel Storage manager that will indicate that the RAID is vallid.   Also if you get the newest version from Intel site for your RAID controller it will confirm it's status once I log on to my system after a boot up.

The Intel Storage manager that shipped with my system did not do that and I had some other issue that the newer version addressed.

It may take a while to find the correct one on Intel site since you need to get the right one for  your RAID controller.   If you expand the device manager, you will get chip set # some where.   Then search around the site.
