How do I defrag my computer

I have windows 98, computer is running slow.  Was told I should try "defrag" but I don't know how to do it.  I used to run games using "applet" but they don't load anymore either.  Can this be connected?

In Win98, you can open up My Computer, select the drive you want to defrag, right click on it to bring up Properties, select that.  Then you will have a window with a few tabs on it.  One of them is "Tools" which has three options I think - check, backup and defrag.

However, before you attempt to defrag, make sure you close every single running program there is.  Disable your screensaver as well.  Bring up the task manager and make sure that explorer and systray are the only things running, otherwise the defrag will never complete.  Microsoft's KnowledgeBase should have an article on this if you search, you will find it.

As for your game not running - most likely not related.  Have you checked for viruses?

1.close all programs while disk defragmentation is running, including screensaver which will make the defragmentation utility stop and restart frequently. to stop the screensaver from activating, from the start menu, click settings/control panel, and click the display icon. then on the screensaver tab, choose the { none} screen saver option

2. from the start menu, click programs / accessories / system tools / disk defragmentater.  also , you can access disk defragmentator by clicking on the start / run / and typing " defrag " into the run dialog box. click ok

3. select the drive you want to defragment and click ok.

4. if the disk defragmenter displays a window that indicates that it cannot run disk defragmenter because the target disk contains errors that must be repaired, you should run scandisk first.
