How do I wipe my HDD?
Hey guys,
I recently just got a new HDD in the mail and it's so much better than the one that came with my Dimension 8250. My problem is that, since it's quicker and stuff, I want to make it my boot drive so my computer can improve also. Unfortunately, I can't do that without erasing everything on my old Hard drive first, and then installing XP on my new HDD. To rephrase, I need instructions on how to erase my old HDD.

The easiest method, that I prefer, for installing a replacement hard drive, would be to clone the exsisting hard drive to the new one.
You need a imaging utility, similar to either Acronis True Image 11 Home or Acronis Migrate Easy 7.0
If you buy the retail boxed version of the Seagate/Maxtor hard drive, a copy of Acronis should be included, that can be used only on their drives, or you can download it from Seagate/Maxtor website.
First, install the new drive as the secondary, image the exsisting C:/ to it.
Immediately shut the system down, switch the data cable to make the new drive, the primary C:/ [ master] and see if the system boots correctly. Boot the system with only the new hard drive connected.
Remember to leave the original drive disconnected, until the new hard drive is working to your satisfaction.
Bev.

Wow. Your answer sounds reasonable, to "transfer" the data over right? THe problem is that I have a new Western Digital HDD, not a seagate one. Will Acronis still work on my Western Digital? Anyhow, I'll give it a try, thanks. And also, if I "clone" the old hard drive, then how would I wipe it? Because i can't have an OS on both HDDs right?

Yes, the retail copies of either AcronisMigrate Easy 7.0 and True Image Home 2009, will work on all hard drives. The free copy of Acronis from Seagate/Maxtor will only work on their hard drives.
After you have cloned the new hard drive and have it installed as the C:/ and it's working to your satisfaction, install the 'old' hard drive as the secondary and use XP disk management to partition and format it, this would remove all the data from the hard drive.
You could also, leave the 'old' HD installed as the secondary, for additional storage
