How long should a hard drive last?

I've got an Inspiron 600m....and my hard drive's gone bad.  The thing is, it was replaced at the beginning of the year after we had it for only 6 months.  It's a very rare thing if the unit leaves my desk, so it doesn't get a lot of travel.

Are the hard drives only supposed to be good for a couple of months??

No it should last much longer depending on how much abuse it gets, I.E. movement, shock and the like. Could be Dell replaced the original drive with the exact same model, since it was done with in 6 months of purchase, and that particular model and or run of drives are bad or have a short life span. Check the drive you get against the one you now have installed. If it's the same maker and model number and it to fails in a short time NEXT time tell them you want a different brand HDD.

The Hitachi hard drive on my inspiron 8100 was crashed twice, so each only lasted about 1 yr.

Can anyone help me with the following question? if the yellow sticker on the static shield bag for hard drive says: 9E106 SUBASSY, HD, 30GB, SFX, IBM, I8K, does it mean it is a IBM brand hard drive?

Thanks in advance.
