How to Defrag hardrive

Question

I was wondering how I defrag my hard drive. Someone told me that it is a good thing to do periodically. Do I have to buy special software? Is there an optimal way to do this. I know nothing about these things but I wan tmy computer to run at optimal performance so I want to do a Defrag. Can anyone advise as to the best way to do this...? Thanks

I like to first run Disc Cleanup ( Start . . Programs . . Accessories . . System Tools . . Disc Cleanup )  let it clean out temporary files and recycle bin . . Then run Defragmenter . . (same folder).   If it has been a long time since last defrag, I do it in Safe Mode and run it twice.   wrs

This program is built-in to all Windows versions since 95. Go to Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk Defragmenter.

Turn on the computer Immediately begin tapping the key. Use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode and press the key It may take a long time to run defrag if you have not done it previously. You may even want to start it before you go to bed.
