How to Reinstall CD/DVD
Hi,
I am just recovering from a nightmare after upgrading to Norton Internet Security 2006 during which my drive that used to be read/write is still not right. I think during the nightmare there were some registry changes. I finally uninstalled & reinstalled Norton & everything else seems ok now.
I assume the only way I can correct this (since I don't know how to go directly into the registry) would be to uninstall & reinstall the CD/DVD drives? I have all the discs that came with the computer but I can't seem to find where the Samsung CD/DVD is & every time I think I find the right one it turns out not to be & whatever it is just starts installing.........HELP??? Where's the right disc?
Thanks,
caseysoo

Hi Caseysoo,
The drivers themselves for your optical drives are generic to your Operating system.
If they are currently not being detected, you can try a few standard steps:
If they are not showing up in Device Manager, then click on the CD/RW link in mypost and scroll to Section 20, article 3 and Section 11, article 2. These cover reloading the IDE controller and Clearing the NVRAM.
If the above does not help, then enter the BIOS, (use your manual or the on-line User Guide from the Desktop tab above, just select Dimension link, the User Guide is in the second column) and verify that the drives are turned on.
Best Regards

WOW, you're a wealth of info! Thanks for the quick reply. The Device Manager sees both drives.
What the problem is, when I try to do a backup say of Quicken, I used to be able to use it like a floppy just being able to backup the new info over the old & erase anytime/anything. Now, it just keeps adding more info to the disk IN ADDITION to what's on there. It won't write over info or let you remove info??????
Thanks again,

Hi Caseysoo,
Sounds like you are using Windows XP built-in program for burning. I have some articles from Microsoft that may be relevant to this issue. Same CD/RW link, Section 100, articles 80, 64, 67, 75.
Best Regards!

Thank you. I quickly scanned all your good info & plan to study it further. I was just wondering, since it used to work the way I described before some registry changes were made by Norton, would it be any help to uninstall & have the system pick it up & reinstall. Would that put it back the way it was in the registry? Would I risk loosing it altogether if I try that?
Thanks again,
Caseysoo

Hi Caseysoo,
At times you can use the Windows XP restore feature, roll the systm back to a date before all of this happened. I have the Microsoft article in Section 100, article 17 of the CD/RW link. However the horror stores about how deeply Norton digs into the Operating system, tends to make the restore if-ie. Norton is suppose to have a Clean tool on their web site.
Best Regards
