How to enable DMA
I know that this has been covered dozens of times, but I've searched through the entire forum and still cannot get DMA enabled for my DVD writer.
I've followed all the instructions from past posts (edited the registery, downloaded the file to try and force it, changed it in Device Manager umpteen times) and it still won't work.
I can get the DMA if applicable bit on the Primary IDE channel but on the Secondary IDE channel (like everyone else I think), Device 0 is on DMA if applicable and Current Transfer is Ultra DMA Mode. Device 1 is DMA if applicable, but Current Transfer is PIO only and I'm not getting any other options.
This is really frustrating me now and I'm wondering if there's anything else that can be done.
Someone did mention to me that it could be a fault IDE cable, but since there seems to be lots of people with the same problem, I'm wondering if this is the case.
I have a Dimension 4600 with fully up to date Windows XP Home Edition.
Any suggestions greatfully received.
Many thanks
Alison

Hi Alison,
In the BIOS, is the IDE channel set to Auto and both Drive 0 and Drive 1 are turned on/enabled?
Best Regards!
God, grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway,
the good fortune to run into the ones I do and the eyesight to tell the
difference.

SATA Primary Drive OFF
SATA Secondary Drive OFF
Primary Master Drive Hard Drive
Primary Slave Drive OFF
Secondary Master Drive CD-ROM Device
Secondary Slave Drive OFF
IDE Drive UDMA ON
The computer still has the original CD writer that came with it, but I've just added a DVD writer.
Thank you.

Hi Alison,
From your information, you do not have SATA hard drive(s). Your hard drive is a IDE (PATA) device sitting on the Primary IDE channel, "end" connection of the IDE cable.
Your opticals drives are on the Secondary IDE channel, If the jumpers on both devices are set to Cable Select, then the drive setting in the Top Bay, "end" connection of the IDE is the Master and is turned on. Your other drive is off, what is happening, Windows XP is actually picking the drive up but dropping it in PIO mode. See if you can turn the Secondary Slave on in the BIOS, save/exit and see if both drives now show UDMA mode.
Best Regards!

And the DVD I was trying to burn now did it in 11 minutes as opposed to 45!
Thank you so much.
