How to play content from a computer burned DVD on a home entertainment DVD player
"I have a "tsst corp dvd+- RW TS-H653B ATA" dvd drive and when I burn a movie, it can only be played on my Dell computer where the DVD writer is installed. When I try to play it on my home entertainment system, it says "error, no content". I know that when I record a movie on the home ent. system, I have to "finalize" the data so it can be played elsewhere. How can I "finalize" the data on the computer so it can be played on my DVD player in my home entertainment system? (BTW, the DVD type IS compatible with both systems)"

When you a burn movie as you call it, you have essentially created a data DVD disc. It is also NOT a matter of the DVD disc type being compatible with both systems.
The problem is that the DVD disc you burned does NOT have the file structure of a DVD video disc. If this is foreign to you, I suggest that you read http://www.videohelp.com/dvd#struct

Thank you for responding so quickly. I tried to read the information from the url you sent me but I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do. Should I be doing something different to create the file structure of a video disc? As you can probably tell, this is the first time I've tried this.

What type of file is it exactly that you have?

Where are you getting the "movie" from that you are burning and what file format is the movie. What OS do you have, also do you have media ctr or vista ultimate. You should check out this App http://www.slysoft.com/en/clonedvd.html also this one http://www.slysoft.com/en/anydvd.html ( not to be confussed with any dvd converter) also what type of DVD format are you using DVD+R or DVD-R. If you are using DVD-R , I would switch to +R , I have never had good results w/ -R. . Even after all this a movie still may not play on some DVD players. I found that the cheaper "wall mart" special DVD players worked better.

I have never had problems with DVD-R in any of my four (4) DVD machines. What does make a difference is the quality of the DVD blank discs themselves. Junk beget junk. I mostly use made in Japan discs.
However, that is not the issue at hand.

Since you say it is an avi file it makes me wonder if it is an xvid or divx file. If so you have to burn it to a dvd as data file. Your dvd player also needs to be able to play divx and/or xvid files.

I have Vista and media center. I need to use -R since my home ent. system doesn't recognize +R. I'll check out the app. you mentioned. Sorry for all of the questions but I've never done this before.
