I'm not able to format a DVD+R

I'm attempting to format a blank DVD+R.  My new Latitude D610 came with Sonic and a Phillips DVD/CD RW Drive.
I go to My Computer, right-click on the DVD/CD-RW Drive, and click Format.  The error messages reads: "Format D: - Sonic DLA" in the title, "The media you have inserted is read-only.  Please check to make sure this disc is compatible with your recorder."
Perhaps I need to try and format the disc from Sonic?  However, I don't know how to do that.
Any advice from anybody?

The Philips CDD5263 Slim CD-RW/DVD-ROM Drive is not a DVD burner.
It is not capable of burning DVD media, it can only read it. User's
Guide is here ............

Look in the Device Manager and post the Brand and Model of drive you have.

Also note, DVD-R and DVD+R do not require formatting. Only the -RW and +RW require formatting, just like with CD's.
