Inspiron 6000 CD-RW/DVD drive not working

The CD-RW/DVD drive on my BRAND NEW (less then on month old) Inspiron 6000 has stoped working. The Device manager reads:
Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)
I have spoken with Tech support TWICE reguarding this issue, the first time they even sent me a NEW DRIVE that has the same problem. It passes all Diagnostics, but still does not work at all once windows has booted up (Not in "My Computer" and no dics will "Auto Run").
Please Help If You Can.
Thank You.

you will need to do this:

Open regedit and go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Now delete the keys:
LowerFilters and UpperFilters in the right pane.
NB only one key may be present but still delete it.

Now reboot and your optical drive should function again.

NOTE: After you remove the Upperfilters value and the Lowerfilters value, if you notice lost functionality in a particular program, such as CD recording software, you may need to reinstall that software.

Hey bacillus,

How the mere mortals are supposed to know stuff like this?
Where is it coming from?
Just curious.

Dear Bacillus - after posting a note about this same problem (with a one-week old Inspiron) I found your note.  Thanks!  I'm curious though what caused the drive to stop working after it appeared to be functioning just fine, at least for one week?  Did some program change the registry settings?

Thanks so much for your help.

Okay I deleted the {4D36E965 etc etc etc} keys but not the upperfilters and lowerfilters on the right pane.  Now IT guru can you help me retrieve and/or recover these keys .  Not in the Recycle Bin either.

I still do not show access to d:drive in My Computer.

Thanks, Li

Did the registry thing, deleted lowerfilter, there was no upperfilter key. Drive still doesn't work. I've taken the drive out, tested, and it works on external power - it seems to work fine. But, when it is inserted back into the computer, the system still does not recognize that it even exists. This, after months of working very well for writing dvds, watching dvds, listening to cds, installing software etc. the darn thing just stopped working. Any other solutions you might have?
