Inspiron 9400 - Installing Linux in external USB HDD

I have bought an external USB HDD, which I will use with my Laptop Inspiron 9400.
I would like to install Linux on the external USB HDD without touching the internal HDD at all. Windows XP is installed in the internal HDD.

I would like to avoid the typical booting screen that Linux introduces when installing it in a computer which has another OS before.

Basically I would like to have install Linux in the external USB HDD is such a way that when the drive is not connected the Windows starts normally, while when the drive is connected I can choose to boot Linux from the external USB HDD.

I read in a forum that the best way to install Linux in the external USB HDD for my purpose is to deactivate or remove the internal HDD during the installation.

How can I deactivate or remove the internal HDD in a safe way? Can I damage any configutation options?

Thanks,

J

I doubt you would be happy with that even if you got it to work because of the slowness of the external drive.

Theoretically you can set the bios to boot from external devices in some models of Dell machines. If that works for you it should boot from that drive automatically if (and only if) its plugged in.
