Not sure if the SATA RAID drive will work on Windows 2003  but I be intrested in finding out if your sucessfull so please post back.

I check the Intel web site and they do mention anything about supporting the RAID driver for Windows Server 2003.

First of normally you have to create the RAID Pre-OS Driver Diskette.  You should have an EXE on your Driver CD to create the diskette.

Shortly after booting off the 2003 Server CD diskette you need to Press F6 (I think) to install addatinal Drivers.   You should get prompted and then insert the disketted and choose the correct driver off it for the SATA RAID.

Assuming you get past this step.  You have to install the Chip Set, Video Driver etc after the install of the OS.   The last think you need to install is the Intell Application Accelerator this will allow you to migrate the disk you installed on to RAID 1 or 0 by going throught the migration process in the Intel Application Accelerator in the controll panel.

An alternate approcah assuming you do not want RAID support you could change your BIOS setting (F2) on power up to solve your problem of not finding the SATA drive  Not sure the exact setting but on my XPS Gen 2 it is SATA RAID on/off.

But personally I would try the RAID driver approch first since it makes you RAID ready.   But then again it may not work with Windows 2003 Server.

Please post back you results.

Thanks. I did not know that the included dell driver cd-rom has an extract function to create floppy disks. That helped. With this floppy disk it was possible to successfully install windows server 2003 on dimension 8400.

By the way: I have no RAID controller. There are no device drivers for AHCI controllers on the Intel website, only for RAID.

Thanks for the update.   I going to be re-loading Windows XP on my XPS gen 2.   Before doing that I may just try the Windows 2003 Server to verify it works like you said.    Some day I may put that on when I retire it as my everyday Workstation.    I running RAID 1 on it so be intrested to see if it will work on Windows 2003 Server.
