Installing CD-RW
I just installed an HP-9310 CD-RW drive in my XPS-T500. The DVD drive is connected to the secondary IDE with the end connector and I connected the middle connector to the CD-RW. The DVD is set on "cable select" and I set the CD-RW to "slave." Everything seemed to install ok, but now the DVD will not read some disks properly. I restored the original configuration with a ZIP drive and it still does not work properly! What have I done? Can anyone help?

Hi John,
You may would like to look at a post a few below yours, one I just replied to about Installing CD/RW.
When you use Cable Select both devices on the same cable must be jumpered to CS. The placement on the cable determines master / slave, master is on the end. If you use Master / Slave setting, then one device is jumpered to M and the other is set on S, location on cable does not matter with M /S jumpering. I would suggest using M / S jumper setting for your CD/RW and DVD but Cable Select may work too. The CD/RW link below in my signature has additional installation tips.

Hi G-V,
Took the day off and we are getting a monsoon here in Southwest Virginia. When I added my latest CD/RW, I ditched the decoder card and upgraded video to Rage Fury but Fury only had a heat-seek (spelling?) so I added a turbo Fan and went with the ATA/66MB IDE cables to cut down on any noise. They are longer than Dells, little stiffer but still under the length limit for IDE cables. I been very pleased with the set-up and no heat problems either.
Take care...
Jeff
