Maxtor drive not recognized

Question

Hi,   I have a Dell Fimension 4600.  I wanted to add an internal Maxtor DiamondMax 10, 200 GB hard drive to it (model # 6L200P0 PATA 133 HDD).  After installing it and booting windows xp, I cannot see the hard drive, nor is it recognized under right click my computer/manage/disa management as a new drive.  So, it is not recognized.  I know I have set it up correctlywith the 40 pin connector setup to the motherboard.  Do I have to change some settings in the BIOS to make the computer recognize the drive?  If so, what should I change when i press F2 from startup.   Thanks   sonic67

Yes, you need to enable the drive in setup, and then use the disc administrator (control panel-admin tools-computer management) to partition and format it.

Hi,   Which one do I change? Primary Master, Primary Slave Secondary Master or Secondary Slave? I set it up as cable-select, so not sure which one I should change. The boot drive should be primary master and my two CD drives are secondary -do I change the primary slave to auto?

Hi thanks for your reply   How do you enable the Hard drive in setup - what do I change in the Bios - the Hard Drive is set as cable select, but how do I get the F2 setup to auto detect the hard drive?   Thanks   sonic

Go into the drives settings and turn the channel corresponding to where you've connected the drive from 'not installed' to 'auto'.
