I am looking at buying a external hard drive.Which is better,Maxtor or Western Digital? Also, how big is the difference in performance in a 2mb buffer vs a 8mb buffer? I'll be useing it to store movies and use my internal hard drive for games. Thanks.

No difference'.

8mb is faster.

Why external and not internal?

Rick, thanks for answering my questions. The reason I was going toward getting an external was for backing up and portabilty.

If you have a XPS Gen 2 you could set up RAID 1 (Mirroing) assuming you have one SATA drive already.    But Mirroing is not a replacement for backup, it certainly gives you a bit extra protection between backups.

You need identical drives to setup the RAID 1.  Search on my post for some setup information if you intrested.  It fairly easy to setup.

Fishn,

I have a 250 GB External Maxtor One Touch USB 2.0/Firewire HDD that I have connected to my system via firewire.  I'm very pleased with it.  It has an 8 mb buffer (7200 RPM).  I haven't had any problems with the drive.  I use it for backing up data and for additional storage.  It performs very well, and it's very quiet!   This particular drive (the 250 GB Maxtor One Touch USB 2.0/Firewire) was honored by PC World with a 2004 World Class Award for best external HD:  http://www.shareholder.com/maxtor/ReleaseDetail.cfm?ReleaseID=136913&reltype=Corporate&maxtor_section=press  I can't comment on WD external HDDs; I've never tried one.

Roger, thanks for responding to my post. The Maxtor line of external hard drives look good, I will check them out. Thanks.

Stay away from the Maxtor One Touch line up. I know quite a few people who have had problems with it, and had to have their drives replaced within 3 weeks of purchase. Apparently, the hard drive simply fails and all the data is lost. I would recommend going for a Western Digital Dual Option External Hard Drive. The 250GB Version is on sale at Newegg.com for 249.99 w/out shipping. Thats just a buck per gig of data. Great deal IMO.

Good Luck
