My DVD/CD-ROM Driver will not recognize CDs

When I try inserting a CD into my DVD/CD-ROM drive, the computer and/or the driver will not recognize the CD. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling my CD-ROM driver and have tried the Dell Optical Troubleshoot and the Windows Troubleshoot programs. I have to cancel the portions of Dell's Optical Troubleshoot where I am supposed to insert a CD as it says the CD is unreadable.

I have tried multiple software CDs and the same result occurs with each.

Hi mariahneu,

I appreciate the trouble shooting steps done. I recommend you to check with factory pressed CD/DVD. You may try to boot from the CD/DVD which was shipped with the system.

In case the system is booting to a Bootable CD/DVD, I would like to know if you ran Windows troubleshooter from the same link given below, if not I suggest you run Optical drive trouble shooter for Windows 7 trouble shooter from the given link:

In case the issue persists, I recommend you run run diagnostics on the optical drive. To run diagnostics restart the system and at the Dell logo tap the F12 key every two seconds. This will start the One-time boot menu. Using arrow keys select ‘Diagnostics’ and hit enter. This will run diagnostics on the hardware components of the system which may take around 5 minutes.  Next Press N for no when it asks you to continue Memory test.

Next the option listed will be: ‘Test Memory’, ‘Test System’ and Exit. Please select ‘Test System’.  Then there will be option to run ‘Express test’, ‘Extended Test’, ‘Custom Test’ and ‘Symptom Tree’. Select Custom test and click on Optical drive  and hit enter. Reply with the status of the test for further assistance.
