NEC DVD/CD+RW Read Problems
I have a Dimension 8300 with an NEC DVD+RW drive. I am not able to read my DVD+RW or CD-R media anymore. Whenever I put in a DVD+RW with files already on it and double-click on the drive through My Computer, it says to please insert a disc into the drive.
It is able to detect an audio/music CD and an installation CD, but not anything else. I have deleted the upper and lower filters in my Registry and performed the diagnostics test that came with the system. The test passed but only after I put in an installation CD for it to seek and read. The drive was working before (I was just downloading my iTunes to a blank CD-R about 2 weeks), so I am not sure what has happened. What can cause it to now only read certain types of media when it was reading all of the ones I had before? Please let me know. Thanks in advance for any assistance!

Hi EmkayN,
One more quick step, click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 20, article 3. Run this article and see if it helps.
If it does not, may I ask, what is the name/model of the drive in question? Dell may have a firmware update available.
Best Regards

Hi EmkayN,
I am so sorry for not getting back to you. Work has me just a little overwhelmed at the moment.
Click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 8-3, article 11 and review the information on this drive from other Members. There is also a "hacked" firmware for this drive. Same CD/RW link, Section 5-1.
I am going to throw this out there just information, the NEC 1100A drive is a 4X DVD+RW drive, how much time do you wish to put ino this drive, when you can pick up a drive 4 times as better that supports both "Plus & Dash" media for around $35.00.
Take a look at New Egg.
Best Regards!
