New Harddrive: Drive ID = unknown

Dim 9200. My OS on my other Harddrive crashed and the only way Dell Tech support said to get it back was to perform a PC restore which would wipe my HD. Thus I have brought a new harddrive to re-install my OS on and hopefully recover the data from my old hard drive.

I first removed my old harddrive and plugged in my new one. I enter the Bios screen to make sure that the drive is on however i get Drive ID = unknown when its connected. I can hear it spin when i power up so I assume that its all connected correctly. If i reconnect the other HD with the faulty OS on it displays all the Drive ID information.

The new HD is a 350GB samsung HD321KJ.

Any advice very welcome!

Enter the bios and navigate to the Maintenance section and use the Load defaults, save changes on exit.

If that fails to give results, follow this procedure

<ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell>

, then load defaults again.

First off my OS has now miraculously started working again. I now have access to windows xp and my normal 500GB harddrive is working fine. Im still trying to connect my new 320gb samsung HD but i still cant seem to get BIOS or windows to recognise it. I have tried restoring back to factory settings and clearing the CMOS.

I have updated my Bios to the latest version. At the minute neither my original or new drive is recognised in bios screen. Any other advice as to how i can get my new SATA HD working very appreciated. I've scoured several forums but cannot see any clear answer.

Thanks.
