New hard drive recognised in BIOS but cannot boot
I have an old Dimensions 8300 which I have not used for 1 year. The old hard drive has now gone so I bought a new one (Samsung 40GB). It is recognized in BIOS (correct model and size) but during booting it's not. The booting process stops at BIOS logo and then get message that Primary drive 1 not found, Secondary drive 1 not found. When I press F1 to continue then it boots up. How can I fix this? I tried changing many BIOS settings and changing and swapping cables and HDD jumpers but still no luck. Same thing happens if I install WinXP from original Dell recovery CD or from OEM WinXP.

Have you set the jumpers to the "Cable Select" setting and connected the hard drive to the end of the primary IDE ribbon cable?
What is the sequence of the diagnostic Lights on the back of the case?
Try Clearing the NVRAM.

That's great.
Thanks for the heads up.
