Not able to burn data or audio using Windows XP Wizard and External CD-RW
Hello,
Up until recently I was able to use the Cd-burning Wizard through Windows XP to burn both audio and data on Cds using an external Cd-rw drive; however, the Wizard now fails to do so. I am able to burn audio using a trial version of the program MusicMatch that came with my computer successfully, but not with the program, Nero, that came with the burner. I would like to continue using the Cd-Burning Wizard provided through Windows Xp to burn Cds, and would appreciate any suggestions to correct my problem. Thank you.

I believe that Nero turns off and will not allow XP burning.

I too, am having problems burning with the CD wizard. I could burn just a few months ago, then recently it won't recognize that I have a CD in the burner. I got a new burner, and it still does no recognize that a CD is in the E: drive, ready to burn. I removed roxio, which seemed to get hung up all the time, reinstalled it, with no good result. Took that completely off again and installed nero, (it came with my new burner) which I love, and I can burn using that. The problem occurs when I try to backup data files, like from within my accounting program. When I go to the Write files to CD window, the wizard pops up and says all is ready and allows me to rename my disc...on clicking "next"....it says there is no CD in the drive, when there IS !! I probably pitched a perfectly good CD burner, altho some of the difficulties have been eliminated, but I still don't understand why the wizard won't recognize the CD is there. In the device manager, all is well, and it says the device is working properly, I have the right driver, and there are no conflicts. Troubleshooter is worthless (which they mostly are) because it does not address this problem option, and I can't find anything about the wizards on the Dell site or on the Microsoft site. Would appreciate any input or suggestions :-)

Where did you find the Roxio to reinstall?
If I can find it I will try to see if mine does the same thing. It was working fine till I took it off.
Thanks,
Jim

Hello,
I still have not figured out how to correct my problem. From what I have gathered from the Microsoft.com Windows Media Player Site Forum, the problem may have occurred because of the installation of Service Pack 2. Some forum members there have been unable to burn CDs through Windows Media Player after the installation of the Service Pack. Regarding Nero, I was directed by a Dell forum member to the webpage: http://www.nero.com/us/Support_News_Service_Pack_2_Inquiries.html, in which Nero proposes solutions for incompatibility issues with its program and Service Pack 2. I have not, however, found anything on how to resolve my problem with the CD-Burning Wizard provided by Windows Xp. Thank you.

I can confirm that the Windows XP "wizard" can indeed copy files to a CD-RW even if Nero is installed. However, like all burning programs, you must disable packet-writing programs like InCD.
I would suggest you make sure the drivers for your external drive are up to date.

Thanks for the input, osprey. Now if you would just clarify the packet thing for me...is Nero one? If so, how would I disable it? Strange thing I'll tell you about, since you seem to know some about this subject...last week, I backed up my info from my Quick Books to the E drive (burner) from within the QB program, that means the Wizard was used....and it did just fine. Immediately thereafter, I attempted to do another copy, and did it the very same way...this time when the windor came up, it said to please insert a CD, that E was empty. Well hummppphhhh, it was NOT empty, I had a shiny new CD in it. This really stumps me, how one minute it is ok and the next its doing something wierd. Anyway, of course I made the additional copy by using nero, but I sure would like to know why this happens. Any input is appreciated.
