Not recognizing CD drive, cannot burn CD

I have a Dell Dimension 8200, and a Philips DVD=RW-28 combo writer. I can burn photos directly through my Jasc Paint Shop photo album (so I know the burner is still working) but when I try to burn a cd using files sent to Windows Explorer Wizard I get the message "no CD in drive" or try to burn a music cd with Windows media player I get a message that it doesn't detect my cd writer (F5 refresh message does nothing). Also, cds won't play when inserted in the CD drive.  I have to put them in the CD writer drive to play. Also, I cannot find any "Recording Tab" to check as recommended in other posts I've read.  Help!

After checking the instruction again I typed in the "2" for a value but it didn't do anything.  I still have no recordable tab showing. I noticed that the other drive with the value "3" must be my CD Rom drive.  Why can I burn DVD's but not CD's if the drive is not being recognized? The DVD burner is working.  it's a combo drive.

I tried it but my CD drive has "no values set".  The other one, which I assume is my DVD drive has a value "3".  how to I go about putting in the values?

Will the drive burn any CDs from any program?  Or does it only
burn DVDs?

In your first post you wrote "I can burn photos directly through
my Jasc Paint Shop photo album
".  Is that to a CD or a DVD?

I am able to burn photos on a CD through my photo album program (Jasc) so I know the CD burner is functioning. I also can burn DVD's with DVD decrypter.  The drive is a Philips DVD=RW combo drive.  My CD Rom drive (Lite-On LTN4865 48Max) will not play any CD's.  In order to play any CD's in Windows Media I have to put the CD in the combo writer drive.

If I try to burn music files from Windows Media the CD Writer drive gives me the message that there is no media in it which is also the message I get when trying to write files to a CD using the Windows Wizard method. It's like Windows cannot detect it.

When I went in to check the registry there was definitely info. missing for one of the drives in the Data column.

One has: (default)  Reg_SZ

Next one: Drive Type Reg_DWord  0X00000003 (3)

I just recently cleaned out all my restore points so am unable to try that.  Should I try uninstalling the drives and reboot?  When I look them up in the Device manager there are no exclamation points and the troubleshooting tab indicates the drives are enabled and working.

It sounds like the DVD burner does work since it will read and burn CDs
and DVDs, but there may be a problem with software.  The CD-ROM does not
appear to work.

Run the Dell Diagnostics on the CD-ROM.  At start up, press the F12
key, the one time boot menu will come up.  Arrow down to the Utility
Partition, select Custom Test, and then choose the CDROM. Make sure
you have a data CD (not music CD) in the drive you are going to test.

I got the CD Rom working now! I can't remember what or who's instuctions I followed but it worked.

The only problem now is burning the CD's outside of using my photo program, which leaves me unable to burn my music and back ups.  In Windows media it isn't recognizing a cd in the drive. Message: Please insert a cd. I put one in but nothing happens.  I know they are good cd's because thay will burn for me in the same drive using my photo program.

When using the Windows CD wizard it gives a message that that cd is not the right type (but it is). Sorry, I don't have the exact message.  I'm writing from my worksite!

I'm using memorex 52X and Maxell Photo CD Pro.  Neither work unless I go through my Jasc photo software program.

When I check in my device manager I do not have the "recordable" tab that I've read about in other threads.
