Hi intheZona,

That code indicates a hardware failure, which is consistent with the drive's inability to read discs. Your DVD drive needs to be replaced. If your laptop is still under warranty, call Dell for a replacement.

Hi intheZona,

Before you replace the DVD drive, I would request you to remove the DVD drive and connect it back to ensure the cable is properly secured. Then re-run the diagnostics, if issue persists I will help you with the replacement.

Sorry to hijack, but I've had similar issues on my Dell Inspiron N5110.

I upgraded to Windows 8 via the Microsoft website and now my laptop doesn't read or write to disc.

The drive still spins up and worked absolutely fine before. I ran the Dell Hardware diagnostic and it stated that there was an OPU error and generic Windows I/O error.

Any advice to correct this issue would be appreciated.

Hi Joffnan,

Same recommendation, I'm afraid. You could try reconnecting the drive as suggested but I suspect a hardware failure.

Same just happened to my Inspiron 3542 which is still under warranty. Contacted Dell Tech Support and the remotely connected to my laptop and verified the OPU test failed and are sending out a new DVD writer.
