On board IDE controller is broken, need help please advise.

I recently tried to install a new HD on my computer and I accidently mangled my IDE controller by knocking one of the pins out of it. Now when I try to connect to it the cable will not go in all of the way. I went out and bought a PCI IDE controller card and my computer is still not recognizing either of my hard drives. I am puzzled at to what my next step is because I have no access to windows since it is on my HD which is not being recognized anymore.

HI,

Please let us have some more information.

What model computer and what Operating System

What make PCI ATA control card.

Have you installed the card as per the instuctions. Generally you need to install the drivers, then install the card and then connect the hard disks to the ATA control card, normally with 80 wire cables.

You may also need to install the card as part of hte installation process for your O/S

Please post back with some more details.

I have a dimension 8100, p4 1.4ghz with WindowsXP. The PCI card is a Siig. I cannot do anything with my computer as it will not recognize the hard drive no matter what I do. I cannot boot up to XP since the HD isn't being recognized at all. Basically I am stuck at just the boot up screen that tells me that the HD is not being recognized.

Hi,

What exactly have you damaged the pin(s) on. The motherboard primary IDE  "plug"  connection or the IDE connection on the rear of the hard disk itself.  This is not clear, although I believe you mean the former.

Try new IDE cables, a regular and easy thing to damage. You will need 80 wire cables.

BIOS reset to defaults

Clear NVRAM using maintenance jumper.

BIOS upgrade to ATA PCI control card if available.

BIOS upgrade to computer

BIOS battery replacement

Did you install the drivers for the card, then move the drives to the card. With the Promise PCI  ATA  control card I have, you cannot simply put the card in place and connect the hard disk to it. You have to install the drivers and then the card and then transfer the drives to 80 wire cable sto it.

Can you read the hard disk on another machine.

What size is the hard disk. If it is over 137GB you will need Windows XP SP1

You may find that you will not be able to read your existing hard disk as Windows XP thinks you are using a different computer. You may need to boot from the XP CD and re-activate or repair the installation.

The drivers for the Promise ATA control card I have, were installed as part of the XP installation program when prompted to install 3rd party disk control drivers by pressing F6.

Before you post I have never heard of SIIG control cards before. You might get by with a more commonly used card such as those made by Promise. The only problems I've ever read of have been incorrect installation or failute to read the friendly manual.

The Promise cards are here
