Partition Magic 8.0 & RAID 1 Questions

 Hello,

I am in the process of purchasing a new Dell 8400 PC.

Looking at the Raid 1 option. Why?? My way of always having my system backed up safely. Am I on the right track?

Question:

Can I use Partition Magic 8.0 with a Raid 1 Setup? Would I partition both drives?

As you can see I am VERY new to RAID, so if you have any suggestions, information, help etc. feel free to pass them along.  Will it be more of a headache then not?

This girl want to learn

Thanks
J

J,

Thank you for visiting the Dell Community Forum.

RAID 2 is not a commonly used RAID setup; for data backup, RAID 1 is probably one of the most common methods used – also called mirroring. With RAID 1, the system runs two hard drives simultaneously and writes all data to both drives essentially mirroring the drive so if one drive fails, you have a backup drive in place and running. You can find information on RAID and various RAID formats in the following web pages:

http://www.acnc.com/04_00.html

http://www.uni-mainz.de/~neuffer/scsi/what_is_raid.html

I don’t use Partition Magic so I am not familiar with using it on a RAID setup (or any setup for that matter), hopefully someone on the Forum can contribute some information on this from personal experience.

I have a 8300 raid 1... Used PM when I first got the machine to set up 4 partitions and it work flawlessly.. The second drive is totally invisible to all operations, in that I mean the raid controller does all the overhead and to you it is an automatic operation...
