Philips DVD8631 won't read multisession CD-R disks

I'm having problems with my Philips DVD8631 DVD-/+RW combo drive in my Dell Dimension 3000.

For some strange reason it wont read CD's that i've written in multiple sessions. Whenever i put a CD-R with multiple session in the drive it scans the disk and just doesnt stop unless i restart the PC. Then if i restart it, during start up it scans the drive again, and again doesn't stop scanning. This results in Windows not starting up. So if i reboot the computer, i have to remove the CD quickly before it starts scanning.

I emailed the Dell technical support and got this reply:
If the problem is specific to reading DATA CDs with multiple sessions then there is nothing much I can do. I can only assist in you checking the hardware functionality of the DVDRW drive. It is able to read and write Normal CDs (Not a multi session) then the Drive is working fine.

Unfortunately i do not agree with this. I tried accessing the same multiession CD-R disk on my other Dell Dimension 300 PC (with normal CD-RW drive) and they read perfectly fine.

I've also read online somewhere that ther was updated firmware for this drive, hi was wondering could this not be a possible cause for the problem. And how would i know what firmware is installed and if i should upgrade the firmware

Any help please?

EDIT: Could Sonic DLA, effect this if it is enabled? 'Cause i just diable it.

RileyM874,

Thank you for visiting the Dell Community Forum.

The drive should be able to read multi-session CDs. You can try updating to the latest firmware version and see if that helps; you can download the latest firmware update at the following address:

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/format.aspx?releaseid=R91271&c=us&l=en&s=gen&cs=

Sonic’s DLA should not cause these symptoms but disabling it won’t hurt so you can try that.

Hi Dell-Stephen

I have downloaded and flashed my Philips 8631 drive with the firmware you have suggested but this does not correct the problem. Since my previous post, i also noticed that when i if i hav a DVD in the drive and turn me computer off, the next time i turn it on again, the drive scans the disk constantly as well, which results in Windows not starting properly.

Are there any other suggestions as to how this problems can be rectified. I have once again contacted Dell Customer Support via the online Conatct Us link and am hoping for a helpful reply.
