Problem installing NEW Hard Drive

I am trying to install a NEW Toshiba MK4021GAS hard drive in a Latitude CPX H500GT.

The latest BIOS (A-14) does not have a PRIMARY or ADMIN password set (both indicate "Disabled").  The Hard Drive password is "Disabled" with the old drive installed.

The NEW hard drive still comes up with the message:

Hard disk ***********-595B is protected by a password authentication system....

I have checked the NEW (and OLD) drives in a desktop system with a 2.5 to 3.5 adapter and neither one is locked with a password.

I do not have another hard drive to try in the laptop.  Is the problem in the laptop or the new hard drive?  Any help in understanding this would be appreciated.

I gave up on the Toshiba and installed a new IBM Travelstar with no problems.

Hi

I have the exact same problem. I removed a fully functioning fujitsu 30GB drive from one of my IBM 600X laptops and installed it in my CPx J 750 mhz. It boots to hard drive password. I hit enter a bunch of times and try to set it up and it shows as no hard drive recognized. I put the drive back in the IBM and all is well. I installed a Toshiba 14GB in the Dell CPx and it formatted no problem and loaded. It's crazy I tell you!!

Have you had any luck solving this?
