Problem with Inspiron 1520 DVD Region Coding

Just recently I received the following error message from Windows Media Player: " Windows Media Player cannot play the DVD because the disc prohibits playback in your region of the world. You must obtain a disc that is intended for your geographic region."

My system information is pasted at the bottom. My DVD type is " TSSTcorpDVD+-RWTS-L632H ATA Device"

I did some searching and found a firmware upgrade on the Dell Forum that addressed this issue ( TS-L632H_D300). I installed it, received a message stating that it was installed correctly, and restarted the computer as directed. After the restart, I inserted a DVD and received the same issue.

My DVD region code is set to Region 1 (United States) and all my DVDs have worked on this computer before (all bought in the US). I am currently deployed to Iraq with the US Army and DID change my timezone from US time to Baghdad time but my DVDs have worked for more than 3 months on the same program. I can't figure out what the problem is. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you

Is the DVD you are trying to play also a Region 1 DVD?

Try using another player like VLC:

http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

This player seems to play anything you throw at it.

I tried playing my Dead Like Me season 2 just recently. Media Direct (on my M1530) kept telling me my disk wasn't the correct region and I need to change it (which was Region 1.

Played fine through VLC.

Yes all my DVD's are region 1. Most are "ripped" DVD .VOB files from DVD's I have back at home (I didn't want to bring all my discs here). Windows Media Player has played all of my DVDs (from disc or hard drive) with no issues until this past week when it stopped working completely.

ok so I tried doing some further troubleshooting and copied one of my ripped DVD's (from a region 1 DVD) directly to my internal hard drive and the movie played FINE! The problem seems to be something with the external hard drive. I can open and execute all the files on the external hard drive and windows media player will play all the .wma,.mpg,.avi files straight off of the MyBook External 500GB hard drive but none of the ripped DVD's will work. If I copy that same file to my desktop, WMP runs it just like normal. What gives? I used some of those other DVD players recommended in this thread and all would play the ripped DVD's off the external hard drive.

I used WMP to play movies off of this drive for the past 4 months with no problems. Now all of the sudden, I can no longer do that. I still receive the same error message listed in the first message of the thread. Is it possible to set region coding on a external hard drive? The problem is obviously centered around the external.

Any recommendations on how to fix? Thanks

Might be a DRM issue that popped up on the last Windows Update...
