Problem with Reading CD-R Discs (DVD+/-RW (Read/Write) 16x & DVD-ROM (Read) 16x IDE Drives)

Similar to someone else who has recently posted a problem with reading discs my new Inspiron 530 PC appears to be having problems recognising CD-R discs.

I had copied some data files, including Adobe Reader & Microsoft Word/Excel files from my old PC which runs on Windows 98 Second Edition, onto a 52x 700MB CD-R disc, in order for me to copy them onto my new Windows Vista PC. However, my PC does not seem to be able to recognise the disc in either my DVD+/-RW (read/write) 16x drive or my DVD-ROM (Reader) 16x IDE drive, as both drives keep asking me to put a disc in, even although the disc is present in the drive.

The CD-R disc is not faulty or corrupted as it is still working perfectly in my old PC.

Can anyone suggest what the problem might be & how to resolve this ?

Thanks

Hi, BobM:

What program did you use to write these files to a CD-R?

By the way, while it would be nice to solve this problem, your task of transferring files from one computer to another would be made much easier by the use of a flash drive.

Hi there,

I did not use any specific program- I simply copied the files to the CD-R disc using the software for my HP CD-Writer Plus 8100 Series in my old PC.

Am I therefore correct in presuming that I cannot copy files in this way from a Windows 98 Second Edition PC to a Windows Vista PC ?

If not, would I be best to transfer the files via a USB Pen Drive Memory Stick instead ??

Please advise me if possible.

Thx

Hi there again,

Can you or anyone else please explain why I cannot simply copy & paste the files onto a CD-R disc on my old Windows 98SE PC & then copy the data onto my new Windows Vista PC via one of the DVD Drives ?

All the copied files (including Adobe Reader 7, MS Word & MS Excel) were located in the same folder on my old PC, so I simply copy & pasted the folder to the CD-R disc, using my HP CD Writer Plus 8100 Series DVD Rewriter drive.

My old PC has MS Office 2000 Professional installed, which I have been advised is compatable to Windows Vista, so I intend to install this on my new Windows Vista PC, not that I suppose this will help to resolve my problem !!

What I cannot understand though is why my new Windows Vista PC cannot even detect the presence of the 52x 700MB CD-R disc in either of the DVD Drives, let alone read any of the files.

I guess I may have to resort to purchasing a compatable USB Pen Drive to transfer the data, unless anyone can advise of another way of copying the files using a CD-R disc ??

Regards

Bob M.:-)
