Problem with my DVD Drive
I have a question about my DVD Drive but 1st here is the drive i am using.
"Drive D Samsung DVD-Rom SD-616E"
I havent had any probelms with this pc in the 2 years or so that i owned it but here is the problem i am having with this drive.
I put a DVD in and the door shut and i watched the green LED light blink as if it was reading the disc. However, my Dell Media did not initiate therefore i cannot watch any DVD's on my PC. The kicker is that i can put an audio cd in that drive and that works. I just cant watch any dvd's or view and picture cd's. Kinda odd too cause i have a vidio game on cd that i have and it plays fine in that drive and the graphics are perfect. I barely used the drive for DVD's as i have another CD player Drive E.
I have run checks on this pc both here in Dell and via Windows update and no problems are found. I have also went to the "My Computer" off the Start menu and double clicked & opened up my Drive D. Ran a Troubleshoot thru there but no problems show up.
I hope my description is thorough and not confusing. If anyone has any ideas as to what the probelm may be i'd love to know............:smileyindifferent:

Hi EagleGene,
Sounds as though something may have corrupted your DVD decoding software. Dell has been shipping PowerDVD for a few years now, consider uninstalling/reinstalling the software. This should be on a separate disc.
Best Regards!

Predator,
I have that Power DVD disc and just tried the uninstall/reinstall and still no luck. I have to open up the Dell Media manually and i get this message: Dell Media experience is unable to detect your DVD
I have tried a few DVD's too but no luck. Its odd, cause no problems show up in the maintenace checks i have done. They all say the DVD drive is ok? I am confused as to what the problem could be.............

Hi EagleGene,
Uninstall PowerDVD, then the same CD/RW link, Section 7-5, article 15. Try the free decoding software VLC, if it does not work with this, then I am leaning toward the DVD laser has failed.
Best Regards

Hi EagleGene,
Lets verify that the drive is running in DMA mode and not PIO mode. Click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 15, articles 14 & 17.
Dell does have a firmware update for this drive that may help:
Samsung 616E

Hi EagleGene,
For you & me, replacing the drive would the option. I do not know of anybody that repairs these optical drives. Especially when you can get a DVD/RW from New Egg for around $35.00 or less.
Best Regards
