Problems re-formating DVD-RWs in Windows XP

Hello, I installed a Sony DVD writer on my Dimension 3000 and it work great with the exception that I am not able to re-format DVD-RW.  The CDs I am speaking of were formatted using Roxio 6.  I am currently using the roxio software that came with Windows XP.  When I choose the option to ERASE THIS CD-RW, windows attempt to do it but it fails.  Any clues as why I am not able to re-format the DVD-RW.  By the way, the only reason I wan to re-format the disk is because I am not able to write to it….

Thanks everyone.

Hi JC,

(Not sure if I am understanding correctly, but...)Once the discs were formated with Drag & Drop (Packet Writing program Roxio version 6), you will need to use it to re-format the disc, Windows XP built-in program will not work.

Best Regards

God, grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway,
the good fortune to run into the ones I do and the eyesight to tell the
difference.

Sorry, I guess I did not explain the entire situation.  When I formatted the dvd, I was using another PC using Windows 2000 and the Roxio software.  I am able to read the DVD on my new desktop with Windows XP but when I try to write files to the DVD it tells me that the format is not supported and that the disk needs to be formated / or deleted.   When I try to do this, the software in Windows XP fails.

Sometimes these DVD RWs can be crabby… You mentioned Roxio V6, what specific version? V6.0 had problems with erase that were corrected in the first or second update.

It could also be a matter of hardware. If you are trying to format/erase a 'dash' RW in a drive that only burns to 'plus' format, it will never work… We would need to know the model of your DVD Burner.

XP/W2K have no bearing on this as neither one have any ability to burn to DVD media.
