Thanks for your reply. I've read the thread in question but as of yet there seems to be no solution.
Yes the CDs I've tried so far are from labels owned by Warner such as Elektra Records and Atlantic Records. The most recent CD I've tried is a brand new remastered version of The Doors self-titled debut album (from Elektra Records) and it turned out the same distorted results in my Studio 15 but works fine in my old laptop as well as my CD player and Xbox 360.
There is a thread somewhere in this forum describing similar problems. In each case, the CD was issued by Warner Bros. Which CDs are you having trouble with?
Apologies for the double post, but I thought I should update anyone reading this thread.
Dell e-mail support got back to me and asked me to see if the sound was still distorted with external speakers or headphones and it still was.
They also asked me to update the chipset drivers found here; http://tinyurl.com/2a25otc however the problem is still occurring even after updating the drivers.
I'd like you to try two things. First, find an XP machine to play one of the problem CDs on. Second, ask a friend who owns a Windows 7 machine to try it.
I have had this problem for some time, as have a great deal of other users, and have been updating my prgoress (or lack thereof) with the issue until recently as I currently have limted internet access. I have been in contact with Dell support and various other users and have tried numerous fixes and workarounds none of which have been succesful. I have also found it impossible to contact the disc drive manufacturer.
The Dell tech support help ultimately gave me the option to have my disc drive replaced and assured me this would correct the problem. I don't want to have my hard drive wiped or pay £30 for an engineer to come out so I asked other users and received a response from somebody who had agreed to the replacement and has found that the issue is occuring.
At this point I can only assume that this is a fault with the drive's hardware or firmware and is unlikely to be resolved until an updated version of one or the other is released including a fix. I intend to chase this up further when my connection is re-established but until then, here are links to a few other threads on the subject which if nothing else may allow you to avoid wasting your time on fixes which don't work .Good luck.
Replacing the disc drive would not impact your hard drive at all. But it doesn't seem to me to be specific to a certain model. I tend to think it's a problem with the discs.
I am also having problems with the TSSTcorp TS-T633C DVD+RW drive of my new studio 1558 laptop purchased in Feb 10, though they are of different nature. The drive is not able to play some of the CD's and the DVD's which worked fine during the first two months.
I have also tried new DVD's but some of them work and some don't. All the media in question is working perfectly fine in all the desktop computers i have tried in my office running windows XP. My drive has the latest firmware. When i insert the disc into the drive it tries to read the media for sometime, but after that it says that the format of the disc is not supported or the disc drive is empty. I am not able to figure out whether there is a problem with the drive or windows 7.
I ran a dell diagnostic test but the results show that the drive is working properly. I also tried troubleshooting with the windows troubleshooter with the media inserted into the drive and it says that the format is unsupported, the media may be corrupt or the disc is not inserted properly. I don't know what to do and this is driving me crazy. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
I need help too. I introduced in my Dell Studio 1557 (in the DVD Slot) a DVD of my husband's and I last trip, recorded by a guide tour, and sold as a souvenir to us.
Also, besides the video, was another DVD with photos (that one works fine, at least on other computers).
The issue is that the TSSTcorp DVD+-RW TS-T633C ATA Device is not appearing in "My Computer" (or I should say the letter D: for the DVD Rom is not appearing) after I inserted that DVD with the video of the tour. Now I can't even eject the DVD from the keyboard.
The system for DVDs is a slot, instead of a tray that pops out (I wish that would be the case) and although I found a small "hole" in the middle of the slot... As that was suggested to do (find that, put in the hole a paper clip stretched lengthwise and wait till the DVD ejects) but without any results, the only thing that my husband and I think (he is a System's Analyst and after trying long time, he said) is that we have to open the part where the DVD hardware is and remove by hand the DVD from there.
I finally contacted Dell. They (as my software warranty was expired) suggested that I buy the one year warranty and then they would fix it for me.
They did, so it was a problem of software driver and with the new year warranty they reinstalled the DVD Rom driver. Now it works.
The only thing I didn't like is that they also run the "clean-up" program and deleted a few things that didn't need to... For example: I wanted to keep my stuff that I had in the Recycle Bin, also, some of my usual internet programs (like Skype for ex) weren't working well, so I had to contact Dell again.
And also (my laptop is a Dell Studio 1557) if you know it like this: Where you see in the bottom bar the "Show Hidden Icons" I used to have about 8 or 9, now I only have 6 and some of the ones I had before seem to show as "This notification is not currently active. It will be shown the next time it becomes active". The place is Control Panel/All Control Panel Items/Notification Area Icons.

Hi Yerjam,
There is a thread somewhere in this forum describing similar problems. In each case, the CD was issued by Warner Bros. Which CDs are you having trouble with?
BTW, here's a Google search on that topic, so you'll see you're not the only one.

Hi Psrocker,
Your problem is different. You should start a new thread.

Hi Matilau,
Did the "D" drive disappear before or after you inserted the DVD? Have you tried booting to safe mode to see if it's visible there?

That would be a good question for the Microsoft OS forum, under software (above).
