Recording VHS to DVD using the PC

I am attempting to record some old VHS tapes to DVD using the DVD burner that is on my PC. Will my current video card work for that? I have a Dell E510 with a 256MB PCI Express (DVI/VGA/TV out) video card.

Another question for the brave, Is the VHS tape information placed on the hard drive first, and then burned to the DVD, or is the DVD made at the same time as the tape is playing?

Thanks!

tigerdirect has a nice solution for this!  And the $50 rebate expires tomorrow.

It is a good deal at $128 and a great deal at $78.

Capture to the hard drive and then put on the DVD.  (At least, that is what I do now.  Maybe straight to the DVD could work, but I have not figured out how to do that yet.)

This digital video converter does mpeg-1, mpeg-2, mpeg.4 and DIVx compression.

Many VHS tapes have macrovision copy protection. This prevents them from being recorded onto DVD. Most new players use macrovision Even on Non copywrited tapes of home video.
So in many cases this is near impossible to get working.

Thanks Guys.......so I guess I need to poke around and look for a converter that can do this. I also want the best quality sound too.

Ziggy out.

You need a video capture card (or external device). These have inputs that will accept your VCR's outputs. They also come with the software that you need. For example I bought a Pinnacle Studio 9 package that included the capture card and the software. I've only made a few DVD's from tapes but they all came out fine--everyone that I gave these to has been able to play them on their DVD players.
