Reinstalling Factory Settings on Inspiron 6000

My son was asked to stay in yesterday in order to receive a call from DELL to reset the hard drive to factory settings, following a Blue Screen incident and further support on the phone. He stayed in all day and no-one phoned him. He is currently doing his Final Dissertation and needs the laptop to complete his work. After waiting for 30minutes on the phone to report the incident, I gave up. As you can imagine, I am running out of options. Can anyone who is working at DELL during the week-end help me? Dell sent the OS disc and we have the ref number if required.

First, run the extended diagnostics on the drive. F12 at boot, Dell diagnostics, extended test, hard drive. It will take about two hours. If the drive fails, replace it. If it does not, and assuming you have not tried a manual install yet, use the quick restore (CTRL-F11 at the boot screen).

Many thanks for this. He tried F11 with DELL but it didn't work.but is trying the diagnostics now as they didn't check the hard drive functionality. If this doesn't work, does the Windows XP disc have instructions for a re-installation?

Brilliant!! My son has now got a working laptop! After doing as you suggested and finding no errors or failures he then toggled F11 on start up and was able to re-install factory settings. Both mouse and wireless are now working and he is re-installing all other software. He's one happy chappy!

Very many thanks to you whoever you are.
