I have a different machine - - an I-8600, but I believe the types of accessories (though not necessarily the size of them) are basically the same.  So CDRWs, DVD-Burners, etc. are installed or removed in the same fashion, though one for an I-8600 may not necessarily fit an I-1000.

You should not need to remove the battery or even turn off your PC to remove a drive from the Media Bay.  If the accessory presently in the Media Bay IS an extra battery, then you should power down the PC before removing it.

Hi steve i think the screw at the bottom directly under the drive is the securing screw but disconnect the battery first before removing the drive well i think this what you do check before you attempt it, did you check with Dell if your drive fits in the laptop cos if you know for definet i can get hold of one of these drives and would like to know for sure it fits and works in before buying it.

Visit the dell.com website and select the "Product Support" drop-down menu.  From that menu, select "Upgrades" and navigate through to the products and/or accessories you desire to research.  A listing of all compatible devices in each category will be shown, as will the model numbers and prices for those upgrades.

If you cannot find any suitable information regarding a particular product, such as a compatible DVD-Burner, etc. you'd like to install in your I-1000, then you need to phone Dell Customer Support/Parts Department and ask about the availability of that specific part.  Hope this helps.

You need to check your owner's manual (or on-line Guide to the I-1000, if applicable).  If your PC is equipped with a Media Bay and the drive slides in/out, then all you need to do is click on the "Safely Remove Hardware" Tray Icon on the lower right corner of your Desktop, then select the drive your removing, and install the new one.  If they are designed for the I-1000, then they are "hot-swapable" and the new NEC DVD drive will be recognized when you plug it in.

The Media Bay uses one optional VERY SMALL flat-head screw which is installed through the base of your PC into the bottom of the drive, if desired.  MAKE SURE THIS SCREW IS NOT INSTALLED BEFORE YOU TRY TO REMOVE A DRIVE FROM THE MEDIA BAY.

If the CDRW drive which came with your PC was factory-installed in the Fixed Bay, you'll have to follow instructions specific to the I-1000 to remove and replace it with the NEC-6500A, provided it is completely compatible.
