Just so we're starting from a clean slate, are you running any packet-writing program, such as Sonic DLA, Nero InCD, or Roxio Drag-to-disc? If you're not sure, check add/remove programs and uninstall if you see any of these.
Second, follow the instructions in the
CD/DVD FAQ to check your DMA setting. Make sure you are looking at "current transfer mode", not just the setting.
I had some Roxio stuff from when I first got my computer... had never used 'em... but I got ridda' everything Roxio-related, just in case... no other programs listed.
Did up the DMA settings... “DMA if available” is the current transfer mode.

Yeah... I've been havin' to use the Verbatim ones instead of the Blacks (which I only got recently, 'n have never worked, despite bein' Memorex)... but yeah... the other day CD Architect 5 allowed me to burn one copy of somethin' with a Verbatim disk...
... like I said... the whole problem comes 'n goes... but it comes more often than not... like 9/10.
The Sony CD Architect 5 is the only program right now that might allow me to burn somethin'...
... I installed Nero 8 Ultra Edition just the other day... 'n despite bein' able to Edit some of these songs o' mine... I haven't been able to use it for its primary purpose... burnin' CDs.
Memorex do not manufacture their own media. They use a dozen or so third-party manufacturers, including CMC Magnetics. Do a search for CMC if you want to learn more about one of the worst optical media manfacturers in the world.

Have you tried a simulated burn with Nero? That will point out data transfer problems.
What brand/speed discs are you using (hint, Nero Infotool will report this)?

... but I wanna' use Memorex Blacks... wasted six of 'em screwin' around with this. lol (D'oh)...
...... they also burn at 48x... I've also tried reducing the burn speed various times at various reduced speeds...
... all no-go.
