Replacement Drives on Precision 390 - Size Limit?

Hello All, I have a Precision 390 with a pair of 160Gb Sata drives installed in Raid1 configuration for data redundancy.

I would like to install replacement drives of a larger capacity.

My question is, is there a limit to the size of HDs that can be installed for RAID configuration, and also will SATA3 drives work ok even though the controller is of earlier spec? (i.e. will the drives default to a legacy SATA2 or SATA1 mode?)

I hope someone has the answers for this.

Many thanks,

Chris.

Hi Chris,

Up to 2TB HDDs will work with no problem. SATA 3 drives should work but my experience has shown that "backward compatibility" is not always as compatible as it sounds. Yes, the drives will default to whatever SATA mode your system has. Honestly, though, there is no actual difference in performance for rotational drives between SATA 1, 2 or 3.

Thanks Osprey for your reassurance. All installed without a hitch.
